Heirloom of Memories – Laura & Marc

Marc sat down with her once and instantly knew this was the place he needed to be.  Mimi listened to his story and what he was looking for, examined his mum's ring, and looked at pictures of rings I liked.  From there she just asked Marc to trust her, which he easily did. The result was better than both of us could have dreamed.

One of Mimi's greatest privileges is to design a couple's engagement or wedding ring. Each couple is so different and their stories are unique, as are their needs. "I am always deeply honored to be chosen by a couple to design a ring that marks such an important milestone in their lives,” she says. When Marc began to search for a wedding ring for Laura, he spent a great deal of time in the diamond district, walking the streets. But the experience didn't resonate with him. It wasn't until a mutual friend of Mimi and Marc's introduced them and the rest is history.</p>

"Marc’s mum was kind enough to offer her engagement ring to Marc to give to me,” explains Laura,  “It was incredibly touching for both of us to know his Mum, Dorthe (pronounced Daughter—she’s Danish) was so approving of our relationship and so trusting of a ring that meant so much to her and Marc’s dad, John. The original ring was a simple round cut diamond in a platinum band.  I always wanted a ring that was on the simpler side, but Marc wanted to update her ring a bit.  With his mum’s permission he decided to use the diamond and create his own setting.  But he had no idea where to even start!  New York is especially overwhelming with all of its jewelry stores and he began to find out that many places were happy to help you design a ring, but they wanted to start with all new diamonds you purchased from them instead of using a family diamond.

Fortunately, a friend of Marc’s who is a fashion designer suggested Mimi. I, of course, had no idea what was going on until the actual proposal, but after hearing the story myself I couldn’t be more thrilled with the result. Mimi kept much of the essence of the original ring, mirroring the band as well as the underlying details in the setting, but she added a halo to update the entire look.  The result is a stunning and amazingly sparkly piece that we will forever cherish.

Marc proposed to me last July in Copenhagen where he had organized a family reunion of sorts to celebrate the event.  I still had no idea! It was very important to Marc that his mum and dad be part of our engagement and he also loved the idea of popping the question in the country where his mum was born. He asked me to marry him on the banks of a canal in Copenhagen at sunset.  Afterward we met his parents and brother who had all flown in from England where Marc is from.  Of course they had champagne waiting! My favorite part about this ring is that it is truly a family heirloom that ties all four of us together.  Marc’s dad bought it for Marc’s mum who wore it for years.  Then Marc took their diamond and designed a ring that he gave to me.  It is now definitely our ring, but still incorporates their love.  I think it’s a beautiful thing!  And one day perhaps we will be able to pass along the same gift to our child who would then have the option of making it his or her own as well."
